George Steinbrenner passed away today at the age of 80. Flags were immediately lowered to half-staff at Steinbrenner Field, the Yankees’ spring training complex. The Yankees won seven World Series titles after his reign began in 1973.

The New York Yankees waited nine years for championship No. 27

Owner, George Steinbrenner, has waited years for his team to win again. At long last, his team did. Fittingly, the game was dedicated to Steinbrenner, the 79-year-old owner. Unfortunately, his health prevented him from attending the game. His son, Hal, the team’s managing general partner, accepted the championship trophy.
