NFL Draft

Monday, April 27th, 2009

This past weekend many NFL sport enthusiasts had their television powered on for two days as the 2009 draft happened.  The first team to pick was the Detroit Lions with 16 losses during last season.  Will their picks and trades get them a win during the upcoming season?  The last team on the roster was the Pittsburgh Steelers, the XLIII Super Bowl Champions.  Will their picks and trades get them their 7th Super Bowl Trophy?

If you are interested in having an NFL player inspire your audience at your next meeting, please consider:

Rocky Bleier - From a combat tour in Vietnam that left him unable to walk, Rocky Bleier rose above all obstacles to become one of the NFL’s premier running backs and a member of the four-time world champion Pittsburgh Steelers.

Vince Papale - In 1976, at the age of 30, Vince tried out for the Philadelphia Eagles, made the team, and became the oldest rookie in the history of the NFL. He still holds that record!

Earth Day – April 22, 2009

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

What is Earth Day and when is it celebrated? Earth Day is a day to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s environment. The United Nations recognition of Earth Day coincides with the spring equinox–often March 20–and was created by peace activist John McConnell in 1969. Today’s April 22nd celebration started as an environmental teach-in that took place in 1970, founded by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson.

Earth Day offers opportunities to protect the environment and save money at the same time. Here are a some ideas that we can all try to do: recycle and reuse, drive less and use public transportation more, use programmable thermostats, use reusable shopping bags, unplug unused electronics or appliances and pay bills online.

Although the Global Earth Day Celebration is today, it’s never too late to have an Earth Day theme at your meeting.  Green themes and ideas are very popular as are speakers on the topic.  For suggestions on environmental speakers contact Speakinc.com or 800-677-3324.

Larry King Interviews Green Czar & Green Celeb

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

Last night on CNN’s Larry King Live, Larry went GREEN with guests Van Jones, the “green czar” and Robert Redford, a “green celebrity.”

Van Jones is on the White House Council on Environmental Quality as a special adviser for Green Jobs.  He is the founder of Green for All and the author of The Green Collar Economy. Van Jones’ goal is to help President Obama put people back to work in green supportive jobs evolving around solar panels, wind farms, making homes more energy efficient, etc…

Robert Redford is a well-known actor, director and environmental activist.  His view is that it is about ordinary people from all walks of life and all over the globe doing things to make people’s lives better, and starting with their own, of course.  What can we do? Simple things such as; plant trees, remove Styrofoam products, recycle, use alternate sources of power when affordable and do away with plastic grocery bags.

If you want to learn more about being Green on the Job, consider Tim Sanders for your next meeting.  Tim is the author of, Saving The World At Work.  His talk will challenge audience members to:

Improve the quality of life of all employees and workers.

Participate in current corporate or association community projects.

Reduce individual and company environmental footprint.

Navy Seals rescue Captain Richard Phillips

Monday, April 13th, 2009

Navy Seal snipers rescued Captain Richard Phillips after a five-day standoff between the US Navy and Somali pirates off the Horn of Africa.

Navy Officials recall:  Two of the captors had poked their heads out of a rear hatch of the lifeboat, exposing themselves to clear shots, and the third could be seen through a window in the bow while pointing an automatic rifle at the captain, who was tied up inside the 18-foot lifeboat.  It took only three remarkable shots — one each by snipers firing from a distance at dusk, using night-vision scopes, the officials said. Within minutes, rescuers slid down ropes from the Bainbridge, climbed aboard the lifeboat and found the three pirates dead. They then untied Captain Phillips, ending the dangerous hostage situation at sea that had riveted much of the world’s attention. A fourth pirate had surrendered earlier.

Captain Phillips spoke to officials of the Maersk Line, who quoted him as saying: “The real heroes are the Navy, the Seals, those who have brought me home.”
