Movies can help us think Globally

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

Slumdog Millionaire, the amazing story of a champion on India’s version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, was the BIG winner at The 81st Annual Academy Awards. The film won eight Oscars in total, including Best Picture and Best Director.   Movies like this, along with past Oscar winners: Ghandi, Lawrence of Arabia, The Last Emperor and An American in Paris are not only entertaining but they also open our minds to think globally.  And in today’s times we should be thinking globally about business and the economy.

A Global Entrepreneur, Tom Faranda, focuses on “Global Realities That Impact Your Bottom Line”.  Tom’s “Strategic Global Strategies” for the next ten years will help businesses develop a profitable five and ten year global plan. These strategies will amaze you, shock you, and they will help you deliver a better “bottom line”. Tom was correct about the rise and fall of Japan, the movement in the value of the EURO, the rise of Asia and especially the rise of China and India. His well-researched “bottom line” ideas will help create global competitive advantages to increase market share and profitability.

A Global Economist, Don Reynolds, presents on the last twenty years and how the global economy has produced three billion new capitalists with a voracious appetite for consumer products, while creating a new global labor market. Asia has become the second engine of global economic growth; Europe seeks to define its new global identity; a Latin America witness the birth of a new middle class; and mineral and agricultural rich Canada is perfectly positioned. Don presents a bold assessment of the current political and economic events and forecasts major trends in the global economy.

Start Your Engines

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

DAYTONA 500 is the start of the NASCAR season.  After months away from the sport, many of us turned on our televisions to hear the roar of the engines.  But before the pedal was put to the metal; we were entertained by Keith Urban (the current husband of Nicole Kidman).  Urban joins a long list of star-studded names who have performed in the Daytona 500 Pre-Race Show; such as Brooks & Dunn, Bon Jovi, Kelly Clarkson, LeAnn Rimes and Mariah Carey.

Was NASCAR trying to keep the program “all in the family”?  It is said several hours before the race, Tom Cruise (the previous husband of Nicole Kidman) made laps in a green and yellow replica of the car he drove in the 1990 film ”Days of Thunder”.  Cruise also drove the pace car to the green flag and later sat atop Jeff Gordon’s pit box.

There were many celebrities on site, but one family that was greatly missed was the Petty’s.  There was not a Petty  on the track.

Who won?  Matt Kenseth, whose previous best finish in the Daytona 500 was ninth in 2004,  He won a rain-shortened race, as he was leading the race when a caution flag came out on lap 146 of the 200-lap race.

If you are considering a race car theme for this year’s meeting, check out the following names:
Dale Jarrett, Darrell Waltrip, Rusty Wallace, Ray Everham, Joe Nemechek, Brian France, Terry Labonte …

Inspirational Heroes

Saturday, February 14th, 2009

Although the amazing photograph of the survivors standing on the wings of the U.S. Airways #1549 jet was taken last month, this miracle is still etched in our minds and in our hearts.

When United Airlines flight #232 lost its hydraulic flight controls on July 19, 1989, Captain Denny Fitch was sitting in a passenger seat in the cabin of the plane. Moments later he was in the cockpit, volunteering his services. A DC-10 pilot and trainer, Captain Fitch was instrumental in the crew’s success at saving nearly 200 lives that day.

Back in 1966, Captain Gerald Coffee while flying combat missions over North Vietnam was downed by enemy fire.  He parachuted safely but was captured immediately. For the next seven years he was held as a POW in the Communist prisons of North Vietnam.

Presidents’ Day – Impersonators

Saturday, February 14th, 2009

February is the birth month of two of our greatest Presidents - George Washington who was born on February 22nd and Abraham Lincoln, born on February 12th.

In 1971, then-President Richard Nixon signed a federal law that proclaimed the third Monday in February a national holiday called Presidents’ Day. The law ended the custom of celebrating two national holidays in February to honor the birthdays. Today, we honor all past presidents of the United States on Presidents’ Day.
If you are interested in a Presidential theme with some levity consider Presidential impersonators:

Steve Bridges
Gene Griessman
Damian Mason

Questions to Consider when Searching for the Perfect Speaker

Saturday, February 14th, 2009

Presented for Cisco Systems, Inc.
May 2007

1.) Content/Objectives for Speaker

-What would you like your group to feel or to know when they leave this session?
-Do you want a strong inspirational message or more of a business/sales message?
-Is humor important?
-Is a big name important to you? If so, will this fit into your budget? (big names are generally $20K+)
-Do you want a speaker who will customize his/her program?
-Do you want speakers who have spoken to other similar groups?
-Will your group be receptive to a speaker who stands behind a podium?

2.) Audience demographics

-Age range of qualifiers?
-Educational backgrounds?
-Ratio of male/female?

3.) Financial Considerations

-What is your budget for speakers…Does this include travel expenses?
-Will the budget you have allocated for your speaker work with the speaker you have chosen?

4.) Format

-What event(s) does speaker follow?
-What speakers/presenters does the speaker follow?
-How much time is allotted for the speaker on your agenda?
-If this is a banquet program, will alcohol be served? If so, you may want a speaker who has more humor than content.
-If you want a speaker for your Opening Session, make sure you select a speaker who gets everyone pumped up for what is to come during the next few days and someone who can set the tone for your meeting and conference objectives.
-If you want a speaker for your Closing Session, make sure you select a speaker who can wrap up many of the concepts and themes offered throughout your conference so that everyone is sent off on a high note - thinking about what they have experienced and learned.

5.) Other

-Who are the past speakers and how were they rated?
-Will you require that the speaker does a conference call with you or your executives prior to the program?
-How do you want to preview speaker candidates (printed biographical information, demonstration videos, live previews, web clips, conference call)?

Need to Know Answers for Creating Magical Partnerships
Presented by: Ruth Levine, Speak, Inc.
May 2007

Q: If I book the same speaker for multiple dates in different cities, will they offer a discount?

A: Yes, usually. This depends on the speaker, and Speak Inc. would negotiate this for you prior to going to contract.

Q: Why does my speaker need to fly First-Class? My CEO doesn’t even fly First-Class!

A: Many speakers require first-class airfare since they travel thousands of miles each week, and some (mainly celebrities) are adamant about this policy.  However, if first-class requirements are problematic for you, ask your bureau representative to negotiate an unrestricted coach class fare with your speaker before contracts are issued. Depending on the circumstances, speakers will often negotiate on this matter. Another solution is to ask your rep. to negotiate a flat travel fee for you in advance of the contract signing.
